About
Ruth Philo is a contemporary painter based in Sudbury, Suffolk, whose work explores abstraction through colour, light, and surface. Rooted in experiences of place and walking, her paintings convey a sensory, embodied response to the world–balancing conscious and unconscious elements with a deep engagement in material and process.
Ruth Philo's Artistic Practice.
Ruth holds an MA in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts and a BA in History of Art from the University of Warwick. Her practice centres on the materiality of paint and the process of making. Often hand-mixing pigments collected on her travels with oils, acrylics, or distemper, she works across canvas, linen, wood, and paper. Ruth’s layering of the physical and the metaphysical invites viewers into a space of stillness and depth, where meaning unfolds slowly.
Exhibitions and Collections.
Her work, Ruth, exhibits widely in the UK and internationally, with highlights including the Jerwood Drawing Prize, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Mark Rothko Symposium and Residency in Latvia, and British Council exhibitions in Poland, Romania, China, and the US. She has received awards from Arts Council England and the British Council in support of her evolving practice. She is a member of Contemporary British Painting (also known as CBP) is an artist-led organisation which explores and promotes current trends in British painting through group exhibitions, talks, publications, and other activities.
