About

Marcus Aitken is a contemporary British artist known for his dynamic, expressive paintings that explore the dialogue between materiality, gesture, and emotion. Rooted in a background in design and sculpture, his multi-disciplinary approach combines intuitive mark-making with deliberate layering, resulting in works that are both spontaneous and considered.

Drawing inspiration from movement, rhythm, and the relationship between surface and texture, Aitken’s pieces blur the boundaries between painting and object. Using a mix of hand-made tools, saws, and brushes, he carves, scrapes, and builds each canvas with energy and physicality–leaving behind a visual record of his process. His compositions often feature bold colours, fragmented forms, and moments of stillness within chaos, inviting the viewer into a sensory conversation.

Aitken’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections around the world. Based in Margate, he continues to develop his practice through experimentation, material exploration, and a commitment to evolving his visual language.
